The Brown Pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis) is a small pelican found in the Americas. It is one of the best known and most prominent birds found in the coastal areas of the southern and western United States. This photograph was taken at the Miami Sea World. It is one of only 3 pelican species found in the Western Hemisphere. The Brown Pelican is only one of the two pelican species which feeds by diving into the water. The adult brown pelican is a large dark gray-brown water bird with white about the head and neck, as the ones seen here. Although the Caribbean subspecies resembles the eastern subspecies, the Caribbean brown pelican, shown in the photograph, has a darker non-breeding plumage above the surface. The Caribbean pelican usually also has a darker undersurface plumage during breeding than does the eastern brown pelican.I also love the beautiful yellow plumage in the forehead. Both subspecies can reach up to 8 pounds and larger individuals have wing spreads of over 7 feet. The beautiful background of this image is filled with breathtaking palm trees and the blue of the sky. Also note, how the main subject in the photo is displaying his personality and seems to want to be the center of attraction, compared to his fred in the left background that are clustered together.
