Perspective photograph (below subject point of view) of the Telluric Totem ("Totem Telurico") of the Fifth Centenary Plaza ("Plaza del Quinto Centenario") at the Ballaja Quarter ("Cuartel de Ballaja) in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico. The perspective and point of view of this photograph highlights the magnificence and monumental grandness of the telluric totem as it "looks" the wondrous beauty the blue sky and white clouds. According to Wikipedia, telluric describes currents resulting from both natural causes and human activity, as well as those discrete currents that interact in a complex pattern. A totem is defined as an natural object or animal believed by a particular society to have spiritual significance and adopted by it as an emblem. The Telluric Totem at the Fifth Centenary Plaza, which is 40 feet in hight, was created by Puerto Rican Artist, Jaime Suarez, the totem is a giant ceramic and granite piece or art. With its jagged edges and shards of ceramic jutting out at all angles, it is not a traditionally beatiful work, but it is certainly striking. Meant to represent the earthen origins of the peoples of the Americas, especially the Tainos indigenous peoples who inhabited the Island, the monument was built in 1992 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Columbus' discovery of the New World. The plaza give homage to the five hundred year anniversary of the discovery of Puerto Rico by Christopher Colombus in 1483. The plaza with inaugurated with great festivities in 1992. Part of the activities included the sailing of replicas of the three ships used by Columbus in his discoveries travels, the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria arriving from the Atlantic Ocean to the main ship ports at the bay of Old San Juan. I was so excited waving to the ships close to a "Garita" at the wall of the city. A view and moment that is unforgettable.
